Issaquah sits in a bowl where Tiger, Squak and Cougar Mountains close in around the valley, and on a clear winter night the cold pools right down at Front Street before the sun ever touches the ridgelines. Alpine Sprinklers works those hours before first light, running plows and shovels along driveways still holding the shadow of the foothills while commuters wait on I-90. Ice forms first in the low pockets at the base of Squak Mountain, where the trailhead parking lots sit in shadow most of the morning, and that's where the crew starts each round. By the time the fog lifts off the valley floor and the mountains show their new dusting, the streets below are already clear and salted. It's a short season here, a handful of hard mornings a year, but each one gets the same close attention to the corners where ice likes to linger.
