Boulder Falls works the long, looping back roads of Hockinson, the ones that connect one pasture gate to the next with more curves than any map really shows, plowing and clearing whatever those roads need to stay open through the winter. Out here, away from Vancouver's streetlights, an overnight freeze can turn a gravel road glassy in the low spots long before anyone driving through town would notice a thing. The crew clears driveways, gravel lanes, and the wide turnarounds in front of barns and outbuildings, working the same rural stretches call after call through a hard week of weather. Fog sits in the low pasture ground on plenty of winter mornings out here too, thick enough that a cleared driveway can vanish from view within an hour of finishing it, but the work still has to happen before the day starts for whoever lives at the end of it. It's steady, unhurried work suited to a place where the nearest neighbor might be a quarter mile off.
