Above Granite Falls' old downtown, the newer streets climb the hillside through second-growth timber, driveways cut steep into land that was solid forest a generation ago. P & C Land Smiths works those same slopes in winter, plowing driveways and building lots where a hard freeze on a steep grade turns a short trip to the mailbox into a real risk. Snow holds longer up in the timber than it does down along the river, shaded by fir and cedar that block out what little sun a Granite Falls January offers. The crew clears access to lots still being built out as much as finished driveways, keeping equipment and delivery trucks moving through a season that can otherwise shut a hillside job site down for weeks.
