Grand Coulee sits right up against the dam that gave it its name, a small grid of streets between the reservoir and the bare basalt walls of the coulee itself, open to a wind that comes across the plateau with nothing to slow it down. Taylor Enterprises clears driveways and access lanes through the town's short, hard winters, when a clear, cold night can leave a skin of ice over every sidewalk and parking strip by morning. The lake freezes at its edges before the middle ever does, and the same cold that locks up Lake Roosevelt's shallows keeps snow packed hard on shaded stretches of road long after open ground has thawed. Working early, before the day's first commute to the dam or the school starts, the crew scrapes lots and driveways back to pavement across town. There isn't much room to expand in Grand Coulee, wedged as it is between water and rock, so keeping the streets that do exist clear matters more than it might somewhere with more room to spare.
