Named for the mountain that shows itself over Graham's tree line on a clear day, Rainier Excavating spends its winters running the same heavy equipment it uses for foundations and septic fields toward a different job: pushing snow off building sites and driveways before the ground underneath can freeze solid. Graham has grown fast along its old prairie roads, new lots cut out of what used to be pasture and second-growth fir, and every one of those raw, ungraded driveways needs a plow that can handle mud and snow together. The crew works building sites at first light, clearing access so framing crews and delivery trucks can get in before the day's first pour or delivery. It's a different rhythm than summer grading — slower, colder, more feel than sightline — but the same machines, the same operators, the same stretch of Pierce County road. A cleared lot on a frosted morning, mountain visible behind it, is as close to a finished picture as this business gets in January.
