Late in the fall, when the picking is finished and the packing sheds run all night, Mount Adams stands white and plain on the horizon above Gleed's bare orchard rows. NewScapes NW works through that season — mowing while there is still growth, raking and clearing leaves off the turf, trimming and edging so the yard has a shape to carry into winter. Cold arrives fast in this valley once the sun drops behind the ridge, and grass left buried under wet leaves comes back thin in the spring. Cleared and cut short, it comes back thick. Setting a yard up for a good March in the middle of a cold November is the quiet part of the work.
