Fox Island crosses onto the mainland by a single narrow bridge, and on the rare morning that bridge carries frost instead of just fog off Nisqually Reach, this holiday lighting company is often the first one over it. The same ladders that string lights along porch eaves each December come down for driveways and walkways instead when snow follows a cold snap, working the island's narrow lanes between stands of madrona and fir. Tide pools along the shoreline stay untouched by any of it, salt water too restless to hold a freeze, while a few hundred feet up the bank a driveway needs clearing before anyone can leave for the bridge. Fishing boats still work out of the coves here in winter, and their owners are often the first calls — a clear driveway before daylight matters when the tide and the weather both keep their own schedule. The ladders that will hang lights again come December go back in the truck, and the driveways underneath are bare.
