Long before the first ferry noses in from Anacortes, the AW Beyers crew is already out on the island's back roads, blade down against whatever thin skin of ice formed overnight on the limestone underneath. Friday Harbor sits on rock the glaciers scraped bare, and out in the San Juan Valley a single hard freeze turns pasture ruts to iron by morning. A shut lane can cost a family their one trip off the island that day, so a driveway needs clearing before anyone can even reach the ferry terminal. Winter here rarely means real snow, more often a dry, hard cold that catches people off guard precisely because it's uncommon. This crew treats every one of those rare mornings as though the whole island's schedule depends on it, because in a place with only one road out, it mostly does.
