At low tide on a frosty morning, the docks and gravel lots around the Port of Everett marina hold a damp cold that clings longer than it does anywhere uphill. Ground Works clears that waterfront ground first on a snow removal call: the parking areas along the marina, the walkways between the boat slips, spots where a thin skin of ice over wet gravel can be worse footing than the snow itself. The crew works low, near the water, before moving inland, since the salt air and the tide both slow the melt down near the docks. Once the waterfront lots are clear, the same plow and shovel work continues into the driveways and walkways of the neighborhoods just up the hill.
