October afternoons on Port Gardner, the ferry horn carries up from Mukilteo and the light goes copper for about an hour before the weather takes it back. Eduardo's Landscaping is usually still out in that hour, working leaf cleanup down a block where the maples have decided all at once. The rest of the year runs on regular lawn care — mowing, edging, trimming, fertilization and weed control — but fall is when a yard either gets handled or gets buried. Aeration and overseeding go in behind the rake so the turf comes out of winter thicker than it went in. A drive cleared of leaves and a lawn cut clean before the rain arrives is a small thing that changes how a whole house looks.
