Before the coffee shops and feed stores along Ellensburg's brick Main Street open their doors, the sidewalks out front need to be walkable, and that's where Hand and Hook starts its day. Downtown's old storefronts sit close to the street, with narrow aprons of concrete that fill in fast when valley snow blows sideways off the open ground to the west. The crew works those sidewalks and entryways by hand where a blade won't fit — clearing steps, doorways, and the tight gaps between buildings that a plow truck simply can't reach — then moves out to the driveways and small lots around town. It's a different scale of work than the ranch country outside the city limits, closer and more particular, matched to a downtown built long before anyone thought about snow removal equipment. By mid-morning, when the shops finally unlock, the walk from the sidewalk to the door is clear, dry, and safe underfoot.
