The last ferry of the night into Edmonds runs half empty most winter evenings, its lights the only motion on a Sound gone black and choppy under a marine layer that has already erased the Olympics across the water. Asgard NW works the bluff neighborhoods above that ferry dock, and on the rare night a real snow follows the wind in off the water, the crew is out after the last sailing, running plows down the steep streets that drop from Sunset Avenue toward Main Street and the beach. Salt air keeps true freezes short here, but the streets that pitch straight down to the water hold ice in their shaded curves long after the flatter blocks above have cleared. Those curves get a second pass before the first ferry loads again at dawn. Homes along the bluff depend on a clear driveway just to reach the road at all, given how steeply some of those lots sit above the water, so the plowing goes slow rather than fast. By the first light off the Sound, the streets down to the ferry dock are open again.
