Evening comes early to the river bottoms around Duvall, where the Tolt's cold water throws up a mist that climbs the alder banks long before the first streetlight downtown ever flickers on. Tolt Tree Care spends its ordinary days limbing and clearing along that same floodplain, working around the pipeline corridor and the low fields that flood every few winters. When a rare storm drops snow instead of rain, the crew is out before the school buses, running plows down the gravel spurs off the valley road and shoveling the footbridges that cross the drainage ditches. The river never quite freezes, but the low ground beside it holds ice long after town streets have cleared, so those crossings get a second pass late in the day. There's a particular hush along the water on those white mornings, engines aside, that the crew has come to notice more than once. By dark the paths are open again and the mist is back where it always is.
