Cosmopolis sits where the Chehalis River widens out into the tideflats of Grays Harbor, and the steam plume from the mill is usually the tallest thing visible over town on a cold, still morning. Grays Harbor's rain usually beats any snow to the ground long before it can stick, so a real snowfall here draws attention the way it wouldn't further inland. The tideflats stay mostly open even in a cold snap, mudflats exposed at low tide regardless of what's falling from the sky. It's a narrow window of work, timed to the few mornings a year when this corner of the coast actually gets what most of the state calls winter.
