The boat from Mukilteo lands at Clinton on the half hour, and the whole south end of Whidbey keeps a kind of tidal rhythm because of it. Eagle Landscape Company works between those crossings, mowing the bluff-top lawns where madrona lean out toward Possession Sound and the salt air keeps everything a little softer and slower. Island grass grows long and lush in the damp, then browns fast in the August rain shadow, so the cut height changes with the month. Edging along a gravel drive under the firs, clippings cleared off the deck stairs — small things, but they are what you see coming up the walk. On a clear evening the water goes silver, and a trimmed yard above it looks like it belongs there.
