The Yakima River gets its start not far from Cle Elum, fed by the reservoir up at Cle Elum Lake, and in the coldest stretches of winter the shallows along its banks skin over while the main current keeps moving underneath. JEDS Resources works the ground around that water, clearing snow from the driveways and access roads that lead up toward the lake and back down into the older part of town, where the grade steepens fast enough that a plow blade earns its keep. Above town, the ridge holds a heavier snowpack than the valley floor, visible as a solid white line against the grey sky most mornings. Down along the river the cottonwoods stand bare and stark against the ice-edged water. The work follows the water here as much as the roads do, from the reservoir gate down through town to where the Yakima finally picks up real current.
