Up the Upper Yakima valley, where the ponderosas start and the highway climbs toward the pass, the growing season is short and everybody knows it. Green Canyon makes the most of it, mowing on a tight rhythm from the moment the snow pulls back off the south-facing slopes until the first hard frost settles into the bottomland. The grass grows fast on long June evenings and then quits, so the trimming and edging get done while the light lasts and the river runs loud with melt. A cut lawn against dark timber reads differently than a cut lawn anywhere else — greener, smaller, more deliberate. Keeping that small green square honest through a mountain summer is the whole job.
