Out past where the pavement ends above Okanogan, the ranch roads run through open sage country that holds a real winter — not the coastal kind that melts by noon, but weeks of packed snow over frozen ground that doesn't let go until March. Backcountry Excavation runs the long routes out here, plowing driveways measured in miles rather than yards, out where a stuck vehicle can mean waiting hours for the next truck to pass. The canyon walls east of town hold shadow and cold longer than the valley floor, so those last stretches of road get worked twice some weeks, once to open them and again after the wind fills the cuts back in. It's remote, unglamorous ground, and this crew reads every wash and drift on this stretch before the truck's headlights even find them.
