The yards up on Cooks Hill tilt toward the valley, so every mowing line is also a small decision about how to hold a slope. GV Landscape Construction reads a property that way first — where the water goes in a June downpour, where the mower can turn, where a bed edge will hold its shape long after it is cut. Then comes the ordinary and necessary part: cutting, edging, trimming, laying mulch, keeping weeds out of the gravel and grass off the walk. On a clear evening you can see most of Centralia from up there, and a yard that has been squared away reads from a long way off. The work runs across the hill, down into town and over toward Chehalis.
