Bucoda's name is stitched together from the surnames of three early backers, and the little town feels just as handmade: a grid of quiet streets beside the Skookumchuck River in southern Thurston County. Coal and lumber once kept it busy, and now the loudest sound on many afternoons is the river talking over its gravel bars.
