Navy Yard City was laid out fast during the shipyard's wartime boom, block after block of small, flat lots gridded close together, and that same tight grid makes the work quick once the plow gets moving, since there are no long driveways to hunt down, just short ones packed along straight streets. It's one of the flattest, oldest parts of Bremerton, low enough that snow here tends to melt a little sooner than it does on the hills above, but a hard freeze overnight can still leave the grid glazed by morning. The crew runs the straight blocks first, plowing curb lines end to end, then checks the newer construction lots on the edges where building work can't afford to stop for a storm. Two kinds of work, one flat old neighborhood, both finished before the day shift changes at the yard down the hill.
