Gorst sits low where Highway 3 threads between the hills and the head of Sinclair Inlet, and cold air pools there before it pools anywhere else in greater Bremerton. The crew watches that valley floor closely in winter, because a skim of snow that melts off the ridges by ten in the morning can still be sitting hard and gray at the Gorst bend at noon. They plow the frontage roads and lots along the highway corridor first, then push out into the residential streets that rise on either side toward clearer ground. The work follows the terrain more than the clock: low spots first, sun-facing slopes last. When the valley finally clears, the water beyond it goes back to its usual color, and the day resumes.
