The Sammamish River Trail runs flat and straight along water that once floated logs down to the mills, and the alder and cottonwood that lean over it now are old enough to carry real weight when ice builds along their branches. Elite Tree Care works that canopy after a freeze, clearing what's come down across driveways and access paths on the properties that back up to the trail. The crew climbs before it cuts, checking which limbs are still under tension before touching a saw to anything, because a tree half-broken by ice is not a tree finished falling. Brush gets hauled clear, wood gets bucked and stacked, and the path back to a clear driveway opens up tree by tree. A certain hush holds that stretch of river on a cold morning, broken only by chainsaws and the drip of melting ice off bark. Sunlight finally reaches the water by midmorning, and the trailside yards look like the freeze never touched them.
