Drive to the western edge of Bonney Lake before sunrise and the plateau drops away all at once into the Puyallup River valley, which is often still buried in fog while the flat ground on top is only frosted. MW Dirtworks works that same high ground — a dirtworks and excavation outfit whose plow blades come out the moment a forecast turns, clearing driveways and gravel lots while the valley below stays socked in. Winter up on the plateau runs differently than it does in the valley towns below: the cold arrives sooner and holds longer, so a driveway cleared at seven can ice again by nine if the salt isn't down too. That part of the job is easy to overlook but matters just as much — going back over a cleared drive with de-icer, checking the low spots where meltwater collects and refreezes by dusk. When the fog finally burns off the valley and the sun catches the frost still holding on the plateau's edge, the driveways this crew already cleared are long since dry.
