To preserve something is simply to keep it from slipping, and in a maritime winter that is honest full-time work. Rain arrives here for months at a stretch, and by February the yards on Alabama Hill and below Sehome carry more moss than they want, the old cedars dripping steadily all day. Preservative Services works against that drift: mowing whenever the ground allows, raking and clearing the wet mat of fallen leaves, edging the walks back out from under the creeping green, holding beds and borders defined. None of it is dramatic, and all of it means the turf is still there when the light returns in March. Then the first dry week comes, the grass answers, and the keeping shows.
