A freshly poured driveway takes its first real test in the first hard freeze it meets, and the company checks its own recent pours first, since new concrete needs a gentler de-icer than an old slab will tolerate. Its crews clear the newer streets toward the schools, working the bus routes and driveways before the morning run, since a new subdivision often has more school-age kids per block than the older parts of town. Snow off the canal rarely lasts past a day or two, but the mornings it does fall are exactly the mornings a brand-new street needs the most attention, since nobody yet knows which corner of it ices first. By midmorning those same streets are just wet asphalt, indistinguishable from the older ones near downtown.
