Up past Belfair toward Lake Tahuya the pavement runs out into logging road, and the newer builds back in there sit at the end of gravel drives cut straight through timber rather than a paved lane. Snow that collects under that timber holds longer than it does anywhere near the canal, since the trees block the wind that would otherwise carry a thaw in from the water.
