The Theler Wetlands boardwalk threads through salt marsh grass at the mouth of the Union River, and the lawns backing up to that estuary hold water and then ice in a way that higher ground around Belfair never quite does. OJP Outdoor Service works those low properties, mowing there most of the year and swapping to a blade when the estuary edge freezes over after a hard night. The grass out here stays wet even in a dry summer, so a freeze locks the ground solid fast, turning a soft lawn into something closer to pavement by morning. The company clears driveways and walkways along that stretch first, since the estuary fog holds the cold longer than the open ground toward the highway does. By midmorning the marsh grass is usually thawing again, bent flat under its own melting frost, and the driveways above it are already dry.
