Heisson Road narrows to one lane in places as it runs out past the horse properties east of town, and Penney Excavating knows most of those long gravel drives from having graded them first. It is a small outfit, one or two machines, working the acreage lots where a resident can't always get a truck down their own driveway once ice sets into the ruts. The work in winter is closer to the work in summer than it looks: reading where water sits in a driveway's low spots and knowing that same spot will hold ice a day longer than the rest. Horse owners out this way need their gates and gravel aprons clear before first light no matter the weather, since animals still need feeding, and Penney's runs are timed around that rather than around a schedule of its own. By the time the sun clears the tree line, most of what's left on the ground is water, not ice.
