Battle Ground has been filling in its pasture edges with new streets for years, and N W Construction General Contracting has framed a share of the houses standing along Miller Road on ground that was hayfield not long ago. Winter work slows the framing crews but not the driveways poured last fall, concrete still curing hard when the first freeze glazes it, and those need clearing before anyone can safely back a car out. The company runs its own crews out to those newer subdivisions, working slab by slab the same way it worked them for the pour, checking which driveways sit in the shadow of a two-story house long enough to hold ice past noon. New concrete takes a different touch than old, since the surface can spall if the wrong de-icer sits on it too long, so the crew sticks to a plain blade and sand where the concrete is fresh. By spring the framing starts again where the ice left off.
