Whipple Creek drains most of the low ground on Battle Ground's west side, and every ditch and culvert feeding into it turns brittle at the edges on the first hard freeze of the year. Drainage Masters spends its summers keeping those same culverts clear of silt, so come winter the company already knows which driveway crossings back up first when meltwater refreezes overnight. The work turns from digging to breaking, chipping the skin of ice off culvert mouths and low driveway dips so the water underneath keeps moving instead of building into a solid plug. Properties along the creek's lower stretch sit low enough that a hard freeze can seal a driveway crossing in a single night, turning a ten-foot stretch of gravel into a rink. Clearing it is less about the snow on top than the ice hiding in the low spots where the creek's tributaries cross under the road.
