Battle Ground Lake sits in an old volcanic crater at the edge of town, ringed with fir, and on a clear winter day Mount St. Helens shows white above the foothills. Clark County Tree Service works the prairie and the wooded lots between them — a Douglas fir set too near a roofline, a big-leaf maple shedding limbs over a paddock, hazel and vine maple crowding a fence line. Winter here turns to ice when cold air pushes west out of the hills, and ice is what finds the weak union in a tree. The crew takes those out before they choose their own moment, prunes back what can be kept, and clears the ground once a storm has done its editing. What is left is a lot that feels finished: cuts that heal, open sky, room for the pasture grass to come back green.
