April in Barberton smells like cut grass and turned soil, and on the clear mornings St. Helens sits low and white above the fields north of Salmon Creek. Luis Robles Landscapes works that season hard — mowing lawns that have doubled in a fortnight, edging them back against the drives, trimming the fence lines and the awkward corners a mower cannot reach. Out here the lots run wide and open, part yard and part old orchard ground, so a lawn is a big canvas and every line on it shows. Regular maintenance through spring and summer keeps that canvas even, right up to the point in fall when the rain takes over again. There is a plain pleasure in standing at the road afterward and seeing the whole thing sit level and clean under the Cascade light.
