Downtown Auburn still keeps its brick storefronts, and behind them run the same narrow alleys Lee's Sanitation Services walks on collection mornings, long before the shops open for the day. In winter, those alleys ice over first — tucked out of the sun, walled in brick on both sides — while the sidewalks out front still look clear to anyone driving past. The crew clears them anyway, on the same early rounds, because a business owner unloading deliveries in the dark doesn't need a second hazard on top of the first. It's a small piece of downtown that most people never see clearly: the back doors, the loading steps, the stretch of pavement between one shop and the next. By the time downtown fills with its regular daytime traffic, that hidden layer of the city has already been made safe to walk.
