Ashford sits at the last bend of road before Mount Rainier takes over, where the Nisqually River runs milky with glacier flour and the cedars lean in close over the yards. South Sound Spray Service keeps the lawns of that valley mowed, trimmed and edged through a growing stretch that starts late and ends early under all that shade. Rain is measured in feet up here, moss is a permanent neighbor, and grass has to be coaxed rather than commanded. A clean-cut lawn framed by old forest, with the white of the mountain riding above the treeline, is its own kind of good-looking.
