Haller Park still holds a stand of sequoias planted by Arlington's earliest settlers, trees that have outlasted the dairy farms that once filled most of this valley, and Brad's Stump & Tree Service works ground all over town that remembers those same farms in its fence lines and windbreaks. Most of the job is stumps and standing timber, but winter storms turn some of that timber into an emergency: a limb down across a driveway, a whole tree leaning after a hard freeze loosens root ground that was never meant to hold that kind of weight in ice. The crew clears what falls and grinds what's left, then turns to the plainer job of getting snow off driveways and farm lanes before a school bus or a feed truck needs the road. Frost holds onto the open pastures longest, well after the streets in town have cleared, so the crews working farthest out start before first light. By the time the sun clears the valley floor, the fence lines look like fence lines again instead of drifted white ridges.
