The soil around Anacortes is thin and rocky in most yards, glacial till left behind on Fidalgo Island that makes for good bedrock views from Mount Erie but a stubborn dig for anyone putting in a driveway or a garden bed. Tonka Ground Work knows that ground by hand, which is part of why the company's snow work leans practical rather than showy: clear the driveway down to the gravel it's built on, not just skim the top, because a half-cleared surface over uneven fill freezes into ruts that outlast the storm that made them. Snow on the island is uncommon enough that most driveways aren't built to shed it, so a proper clearing matters more here than in places used to the weight. The crew works fast on the rare morning it's needed, aware that a mild push of air off the strait will likely soften the rest of it to rain within a day. Underneath it all is the same ground they grade every other season, waiting to be gardened again the moment the white is gone.
