Route 14 runs south out of Williamstown into the Gulf, a narrow green trench where the light arrives late and leaves early. Xtreme Xteriors mows the town on either side of it — village lots, hillside dooryards, the wide yards out toward the Barre road. Mowing, trimming, edging, and the autumn work of pulling leaves off a lawn before snow presses them flat. Vermont grass runs hard in June and slows by August, and the schedule follows the grass rather than the calendar. When a yard is cut and the edges are struck clean, the whole property looks like it is standing up straight.
