Route 14 threads the Williamstown Gulf, a narrow green trench where hemlocks lean in over the pavement and the light arrives late. Catamount Tree Service works the town on both sides of it — ridge farms, the village along the Stevens Branch, newer yards out toward the granite sheds. A sugar maple that has shaded a road for a century still needs its deadwood taken out; a spruce set too close to a house needs its lower limbs raised so the siding can dry. When a nor'easter loads the hardwoods and something gives at two in the morning, the day starts with saw, chipper and a truck that can get up a frozen hill. What's left behind is unremarkable in the way good work usually is: a clear drive, a stack of rounds, and the gulf gone quiet again.
