Wells wraps around Lake St. Catherine, and in deep winter the lake turns into a white field with fishing shacks on it and a wind that comes straight down its length. Leon Corey Excavation Inc plows against that wind — camp roads, year-round driveways, farm lanes and lots along Route 30 in the slate country. Snow here drifts more than it falls, so the work is as much about where it goes as how fast the blade moves. Walks get shoveled, ice gets sanded, and the drive is widened while there's still room to widen it. A camp road opened at daybreak is its own quiet kind of accomplishment.
