Vergennes is small enough to walk end to end, a few blocks of brick storefronts set above the falls of Otter Creek. Ashley Robinson, Landscape Designer works on the lawns here — mowing, edging, trimming, and the cleanups that open and close the season. A designer's eye shows up in small ways: the sweep of a mowing line, the way an edge follows the curve of a walk instead of fighting it. In June the light comes late and low across the yards near City Park, and a lawn cut that afternoon holds its stripes until dark. The pleasure is in the composition — grass, edge, shade — arranged so a house looks like it belongs where it stands.
