Late August in Tunbridge smells like cut grass and fairground dust, and the hill roads climb out of the village into hayfield light. One Legged Mechanic mows the dooryards and field edges up those grades, where a lawn is really a clearing the woods keep trying to take back. Trimming around fence posts, apple trees and stone steps takes the longest and shows the most. By the time the sun drops behind the ridge the yard is short, the borders are clean, and nothing is left scattered on the porch boards. A small thing, done again next week, on a road most people only drive past.
