MJS Landscape works the ground around the Town of Rockingham, where the Connecticut River narrows at the Great Falls and the brick blocks of Bellows Falls give way to hillside dooryards and river-bottom green. Their days run to turf care and organic fertilization, topdressing and hydroseeding, irrigation lines set in before the heat arrives, landscape planting, stone walks and patios, and full renovations for lawns that have been asked to give too much. When the cold half of the year takes the valley, the same trucks turn to snow removal, opening drives while the light is still blue over the ridgelines. There is a plain, physical satisfaction in it: a hydroseeded slope coming up thick, an edge held true along a walkway, a yard that looks tended even from the road. From Keene and southwest New Hampshire across into southern Vermont and the Upper Valley, the work leaves places better kept than it found them.
