East Topsham keeps its sugarbush up on the high ground, where hardwoods run in long ranks toward Groton and the wind moves through them all winter. Limlaw Family Maple Farm turns to the lawns once the ground thaws, mowing week by week, trimming close around foundations and fence lines, edging where grass meets drive. At this elevation the season starts a little late and ends a little early, so nothing in between goes to waste. Yards get opened up in spring and cleared down again once the leaves are off the hill. The thing that lingers is the smell of the first cut of the year, somewhere in the middle of May.
