Below Mount Ascutney, the land around Springfield and Weathersfield folds down toward the Black River in terraces of ledge and old pasture — ground that has to be read before it can be worked. TSPM Excavating reads it: cutting complete house sites and foundation pads, setting septic systems and perimeter drains, ditching utilities, driveways and roads, building retention walls, clearing land back to open field, shaping ponds, riding rings and trails, and mowing fields out to the treeline. There is a plain, lasting pleasure in the result — a driveway that sheds water instead of holding it, a pad squared and level for a builder's first chalk line, a paddock standing open where alders stood in spring. When the valley turns white, the same machines take up snow removal, and a road carved in July is bare again before the hills have caught the light.
