Snow comes into Springfield after dark more often than not, and by ten the hill streets above Main lie silent under it. Brehme Enterprises runs through those hours, plowing driveways and parking areas, clearing walkways, spreading sand where a slope insists on it. Springfield was built as a machine-tool town on close tolerances, and there is a version of that in plowing too — how near you can shave a drive without touching the lawn underneath. Storm nights are long and cold and mostly solitary: headlights, falling flakes, the scrape of the blade. Then morning comes, the town gets where it is going, and that is the whole of the reward.
