When the docks come out of Keeler Bay in the fall, the shore lanes go quiet and the season turns over. Lakeside Dock Handlers stays on through it, plowing the narrow camp roads and driveways that thread the South Hero shoreline, shoveling steps and walks right down to the door, and laying salt or sand where shade holds ice from December to March. These lanes are tight — cedar on one side, a bank on the other — so snow has to be placed, not merely moved. It is careful work at an unglamorous hour. The measure of a night is simple enough: every door on the bay opens onto clear pavement.
