The work here is vertical and patient — climbing and rigging tall or dead timber down piece by piece, running the bucket truck, taking stumps below grade with the track grinder, feeding brush to the chippers, splitting on site until a whole season's heat stands stacked in the dooryard. When ice loads the hardwoods and a storm lays them across a driveway, the crew clears what came down and gives the ground back its shape. Other days it is a trail cut quietly through the beech, or a view opened toward the far blue hills that did not exist at breakfast, with tractor and backhoe work smoothing the ground behind them and a leftover trunk carved by chainsaw into something worth walking out to see.
