Six in the morning in the Rail City, and the light comes up over Aldis Hill in a long slow slide down the brick blocks of Main Street — that is when Westfall Lawn Care Services is already out. In winter the truck works the driveways of Saint Albans City while the maples still stand black against a gray Champlain sky, pushing the night's snow back into clean banks so a whole street can leave for work without a second thought. Come the green months the sound changes to the steady pass of the mower, lawns cut in even lanes and edged sharp where turf meets walkway, the smell of it hanging in the evening air the way it only does in a Vermont July. It is plain, physical work, and it leaves a plain, satisfying mark: a yard that looks cared for, a drive you can walk without picking your steps. That is the whole of it, and it is enough.
