Winter arrives in Saint Albans City off the lake — wind first, then the long gray hours, then the storm that fills a driveway between supper and morning. Gosselin Construction plows through those hours, clearing driveways and lots, cutting the banks back square along the city grid, sanding and salting where a street's pitch turns slick. This has been a railroad town since the tracks came through, and it still keeps railroad hours; somebody is always leaving before light. The satisfaction is simple and it never wears out: a drive opened clean to the pavement, a walk you can cross in ordinary shoes, headlights swinging out onto a street that was impassable at four in the morning.
